Developing Sustainable Communities Through Local Manufacturing

Pre 2026 – FMCG Supplier Development Initiative projects implemented across the Eastern Cape in partnership with public, private and community stakeholders.

Projects

i-SPAZA Yellow Maize & Beans Project (Nkonkobe Community Farmers)

The Supplier Development Initiative (SDI) is a commercial consortium that supports local and rural manufacturers to access high-demand consumer markets. It connects producers with retailers, government, and partners to build a strong, inclusive supply chain.

SDI helps emerging businesses grow production, secure investment and funding, and create jobs. Through agro-processing and manufacturing support, it promotes food security, economic growth, and sustainable community development in South Africa.

ECRDA RED HUB Milling Programme

The ECRDA’s Rural Enterprise Development Hubs (RED HUBs) are receiving private commercial investment to improve product quality and increase output to meet growing market demand. This follows a commitment from the SPAR Group to support emerging manufacturers through its R250 million annual private label supply chain programme in the Eastern Cape.

The initiative is a collaboration between SPAR Eastern Cape and the FMCG Supplier Development Initiative, a partnership involving Walter Sisulu University, First Business South Africa, COGTA EC, and ECRDA’s RED HUB Milling operations, aimed at strengthening SMME manufacturing and agro-processing in the region.

Innovative Bold Concepts – Pearl B

Innovative Bold Concepts provide benefits for Enterprise Development (ED), Supplier Development (SED), and Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE).

The programme offers mentorship for MSMEs by FMCG partners, access to supply chain resources, promotion of local product sourcing, and improved competitiveness through knowledge sharing. Participating businesses can also earn valuable B-BBEE points, enhancing corporate social responsibility and compliance with South African regulations.

These initiatives strengthen the local business ecosystem, support economic inclusivity, and create opportunities for growth. In addition, the FMCG SDI programme and its aligned private and public stakeholders offer investment opportunities for investors and corporate companies.
